Travel Tips
To make your visit in The North East India, a memorable one , you are advised to take some basic steps :
- The best time to visit North East India is from mid October to March.
- A suitcase is the best luggage option in India. It is lockable, keeps your cloths flat and is less likely to get damaged. For some, a strong lockable backpack is still a good carrying option.
- A sleeping bag can always come in handy while traveling here.
- Soap, toothpaste, shampoo, shaving cream/ gels, sanitary pads is readily available. If you use any specific brands, it is always advisable to bring your own toiletries.
- A torch/ flashlight and candles are advised to carry as power cuts are common here and there is little street lighting at night.
- All important documents like passport, visa, credit cards, travel insurance policy, air/bus/train tickets, driving license etc should be photo copied and one copy should be left with somebody at home and another with you, separate from the originals.
- In case of loss of any documents, contact nearest Tourist information Office/Police Station/State Government tourist offices.
- Please exchange currency in Govt. approved banks and moneychangers only. Never accept very worn or dirty notes. Always ask for a receipt.
- Credit cards are not accepted in most places in North East India and so it is advisable to bring Travelers Cheque or Cash. ATM's are now available in most major cities.
- Drink sealed bottle mineral water only while traveling.
- There is prohibition on Liquor in a few states .Check details from the nearest Tourist Office about the same.
- Smoking is not allowed in public places and transport in most places.
- Check about the photography and video permission in any monument/religious site/ tourist spot.
- Observe the local traditions/ customs while visiting places.
- .It is always advisable to shop at Govt. Emporia/ Reputed and Fixed price shops to ensure quality and reasonable prices.
- Support Eco Tourism and be a responsible traveler.
- DO NOT accept food and drinks from strangers.
- DO NOT encourage beggars by giving money to them.
- DO NOT buy articles made from rare / endangered species of animals.
